Shooting Schedule, General plan, Equipment 'n Stuff for Friday
8am.
Meet at studio, take out equipment, set up for color footage, prep model (hair & makeup)
Set up:
9am.
Shoot color footage, 3 outfits one after the other (possibly re-do hair for each outfit).
-model dances around, spins, flips hair, etc... (movements determined at the time of the shoot)
-in 1st shot, model walks into frame and starts dancing around
-camera on tripod
-focal length 105
-aperture f4
-ISO 2000
-shutter 1/30
-play with going out of focus as model moves
10am.
Change setup for b&w footage (shot in color), restyle model for first look.
Set up:
10:30am - 11:45am
Shoot b&w footage, same 3 outfits one after the other.
After some testing we felt we could not successfully perform the smooth pans we originally wanted. Instead we will do many relatively still video images in series. So the video will go from one color shot with movement and flare to the series of b&w "stills," back to the color shot of the next outfit, then to the next series of b&w "stills," etc...
Specific shots of specific features of the clothing combined with small movements on the part of the model (fingers fiddling with buttons, foot jiggling, head turning...)
-model in specific poses (determined at the time of the shoot)
-camera on tripod
-focal length at least 80mm
-shallow depth of field, but in focus
Equipment:
5D Mark II
Canon 24-105 lens
4 x 500w Smith Victors
1 yellow, 1 red, 1 pink, 1 orange gel (mixed together, warm tones)
4 barn doors
spun glass and clothes pegs
tripod
reflector?
booms (sand bags, super clamps)
FAN!

Equipment & Other Pre-Production Thoughts
EQUIPMENT
-5D Mark II
-monopod with weight
-tripod for video
-LEDs? White Lightning modeling lights?
-gels
-diffusion (scrim, panels)
-simple makeup (concealer?, mascara, soft grey shadow?, somewhat enhanced natural lip)
-hair brush, elastics (variations of loose vs. tied up hair)
-clothes
-steamer
TESTING in studio this coming tuesday morning:
-figure out gel colours (vis-a-vis clothes)
-needed width of background relative to desired focal length (side by side seamless?)
-decide on type of light (movement of light?)
-how smooth/controlled are the pans with monopod and weight
-test model movements relative to camera (focus, accompanying camera movements)
-establish desired poses per outfit

STORYBOARD
We wanted to illustrate our two concepts for the clothes in a series of contrasting frames. It begins with light, colour, and flare. The model moves into the shot, she is moving in some way (dancing, spinning, walking...). We follow her movements somewhat loosely with the camera, moving in and out of focus as she moves. In these types of frames, the ambiance is more important than the clothing itself. This is in sharp contrast to the alternating frames which will be technically precise, b&w, smooth pans over the clothing, the model, details. These shots may also have tiny movements, such as a finger playing with a lapel. The two types of shots will flip back and forth throughout the ad until 3 outfits have been shown. At the end, the model will move towards the camera, do something cute/silly, and then run away out of focus.
We are also thinking we may use some kind of tribal/roots rhythm over the b&w shots, with a song over the color shots.

CHANGE OF PLAN!
Because it is getting REALLY cold and rainy out, we have decided to
limit our shoot to the studio. We would still like to maintain the idea
of juxtaposing the very clean, minimalist studio shots, against
something more fun and colorful. We plan to do this by shooting the
clean, minimalist shots in black and white, and by restricting movement
to only the camera as it pans over the model (who will be unmoving). We
will contrast this with studio shots that are done in color, that show
the model in motion, possibly with props, and with more colorful
backgrounds. The camera will also be moving in a less restrained way. We
will also still incorporate flare & backlight, and we may even try
to mimic daylight. We can also still use our idea of having the shots go
in and out of focus as we follow the model's movements. This will
contrast with the very technically accurate, b&w, formal pans over
the model and the clothes. These shots are designed to really show the
clothing, the texture, the form more than the atmosphere. Freedom/adventure vs. classic. The New Classic. Voila.
Inspiration for color/moving studio shots
These stills are just a rough idea of what we could do with motion and attitude and color. Our palette would be more muted, and the movements won't be frozen of course. But we want to convey that same sense of freedom and adventure that we might have accomplished outside. Perhaps the model will dance like Kate Moss in the video, or spin, or walk, or jump...
